The beginnings of tourism

The citizens of Vercorin, once a populated village in centuries gone-by, began to colonise the plain. Then, in the cleansed Rhone valley, agriculture became a source of income and the factory in Chippis opened its’ doors. The mountain village saw itself being neglected because of the magnetism of the plain. This phenomenon could have drawn itself out and Vercorin would have been transformed into a simple pastureland with only a few families living there all year long, but who would have worked down on the plain.

Joining forces

Two parishes, two churches, two Development Societies - but one unique Commune.

Vercorin, as well as Réchy and Briey, is part of the Commune of Chalais which lies at an altitude of 500m.

The essential part of Chalais’ priorities were very similar to Vercorin’s: firstly - the production of precious wood and its vital transport along the indispensable block-wood slides, then, the upkeeping of their pastures and - of equally great importance - the thorough preparation of the regular seasonal transhumance. T

he 1564 act concludes that, even though they would unite their capital, each community would nonetheless keep their institutions separate. As such, Vercorin as well as Chalais were each governed by their very own vice-chatelaine and prosecutor.

The parish and its church

The ancient church of Saint-Boniface (XII-XIII century) was demolished in 1963. The base of the walls conveys the shape it assumed until 1704. Only the chancel and steeple were preserved.

The parish owned its own rural farm buildings and land, which were run by the priest himself or, more often, put out to let.

The parish of Vercorin was established around 1200 – the date it’s roman sanctuary was built – which was a short period after the first parishes were founded in Valais.

The rectory itself dates from around 1705 and the roof was raised again in 1831.

The bottom 12 metres of the steeple (a Romanesque tower), were part of the original building.

The upper floor where we find the bells and spire dates from the 18th century. The 4-belled Valaisan carillon. The late gothic chancel (1500).

The set of wall paintings we can admire here dates from 1520.

Vercorin’s gothic stained glass windows (app. 1490) are owned today by the Zurich National Museum.

The Citizens Assembly House

Formerly, this building was used as the village schoolhouse with only one class of children.

Entirely renovated in the year 2000 it is now used as a function room for conferences or other activities.

The mixture of old wood and modern lighting makes it stylishly attractive.
