Chandolin - Ella Maillart explored the world widely. Chandolin was where she spent the last years of an action-packed life. The Ella Maillart museum with its permanent exhibition showcases the work of this extraordinary woman.
Born in Geneva in 1903, Ella Maillart lived her life at a brisk pace. A sportswoman, explorer and adventurer, her talents also included photography, journalism and writing. Her various voyages around the world were a source of inspiration for her novels.
In 1946 she settled in Chandolin, where she had her chalet, “Atchala”, built. She spent six months a year here until her death in 1997. A woman who lived life to the full, she is considered one of the major travellers of the 20th century.
The Ella Maillart museum retraces her life and works. This permanent exhibition, housed in the former chapel of Sainte-Barbe in Chandolin, illustrates Ella Maillart’s life through:
- photographs and drawings
- articles and posters
- various objects of interest
- a video installation
