Community organisations.

One-day conference held by the Société d'histoire du Valais romand (SHVR) in Grimentz, on the theme of "Communal work"..

The organisation of work that is shared by the community is deeply ingrained in Valais. Rural communities, usually organised in the form of cooperative organisations called consortages, created and operated some of their assets such as alpine pastures, irrigation channels and paths, and handed them down from one generation to the next. There has recently been a revival of this type of management, in the form of agricultural cooperatives, buyer groups and common-interest organisations of all kinds. Following on from the thoughts of Elinor Ostrom, the first woman to win a Nobel prize in economics and a fervent admirer of the Valais consortages, we will examine the various alternative forms of management of "shared assets" that provide a middle way between market-driven, for-profit organisations and full public ownership.

• Valais irrigation channels and UNESCO; the construction of the Grand Canal Liddes-Orsières, by Pascal Tissières, engineer and former chairman of the Association valaisanne des bisses
• The role of the Valais bourgeoisies, past, present and future, by Adalbert Grand and Jacques Vuignier, of the Fédération des bourgeoisies valaisannes
• The invention of the communal cowshed in Anniviers, by Bernard Crettaz, ethnologist, and Urbain Kittel, architect.

12:30 Lunch at the Maison bourgeoisiale (booking required, choice of 2 main courses)

Starter: Valaisan specialty (served with the pre-lunch drink)
Main course 1: Braised Hérens beef with lardons & chanterelle mushrooms - Polenta and vegetables
Main course 2: Trout fillet with almonds – Saffron risotto with vegetables
Dessert: Prune delight – Coffee or tea - Digestif
Petite Arvine and Syrah wines from the Bourgeoisie de Grimentz will be served with the meal

15:00 Tours (booking required)
Guided tours in groups:
• The village of Grimentz, including the church, mills, bread oven, heritage centre and archaeological remains (cup-stones).
The tour ends with a visit to the village hall and its cellar, with its famous "glacier wine".
• Option of stopping in Vissoie on the way down, to walk along the "Chemin des images," an open-air art trail from the church to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Compassion, featuring photographs of the Val d'Anniviers taken by Charles Krebser in the 1920s and 1930s.
