La Nonna

La Nonna is a hundred-year-old grandmother who lives with a modest family of Italian immigrants in Argentina. La Nonna is a glutton who gorges herself, day and night, on whatever she can find! Her insatiable appetite forces every member of the family to work ever harder, resorting to desperate and unreasonable measures just to survive. The whole question revolves around: how to feed this monster, who, little by little, is ruining, consuming and decimating those around her…?

"La Nonna" is a tragicomedy by the Argentine playwright Roberto Cossa, published in 1977. The play premiered during Argentina’s last military dictatorship.

Against this backdrop, "La Nonna" — this asexual, grotesque figure, devoid of empathy or compassion—serves as a kind of parable for a power that imposes its will on everything and drives people to the brink. She could just as easily be a metaphor for many other situations of diverse and varied oppression, a reflection of the relentless society in which we live, or a mirror of all the fears that prevent us from living and ultimately overwhelm us!
