The fountain of "les deux pauvres" (the two poor men)

The legend of the two poor people

Travellers to the tip of Brentaz, a mountain to the south of Vercorin, will notice two small elevations on the ground, clearly depicting two silhouettes with a besace, also known as a bissac, on their backs. There is a legend attached to these "two stones":

"Once upon a time, two shepherds were tending their cattle on the Brentaz side of the river, when one fine day they saw a beggar arrive with his sack on his back. Little by little, he approached them. After greeting them, he asked them for a little black bread, saying that he had come a long way, that the journey had made him tired and that he was dying of hunger and thirst. The two shepherds were unmoved by the sight of so much misery and began to ridicule the poor man, asking him what he could possibly be carrying in his saddlebag. Then the beggar, who was none other than Our Lord, disguised in these rags to test these hard-hearted people, straightened up and said to them: "Men of uncharitable souls, you who have no pity for the poor, you will be turned to stone, for of stone you are and of stone you will be". No sooner said than done. The two shepherds were turned on the spot into the rocks that are still called the stone of the poor. They carry and will always carry, a terrible example to heartless men, the bissac on their backs".

The Cabbage Garden
A vegetable garden in front of the house? No, Vercorin has placed it in a communal area at the entrance to the village. With its squares of thick greenery, this area almost looks like the Chinese countryside!
