Welcome

This historic trail will take you through Vercorin via narrow streets and alleyways.
Before setting off, we recommend that you analyse the route carefully. As far as possible, a leader should take charge of leading the group.

Modern man does not always understand the harmony of landscapes inhabited in the past. His ignorance leads him to do them irreparable harm. When you return from this "village trail", your view of Vercorin may be enriched and changed: "You will tremble with me for the preservation of so many things with their old-fashioned charm, for the existence of the tiny garden squares and the Délagettes fountain, for the integrity of the Place du Village, for the old stone walls that are being stripped of their lime and whose stone skeletons are being exposed, for the age-old planks that are about to be covered in covering paint" (Henri Marin).

Archaeological studies have revealed that people were already growing barley in the fields on the mountain 1600 years before Christ. Built in the 11th century, the church of Saint Boniface is a permanent reminder of the many generations of worshippers who have bowed at the foot of its altars.

The village itself has undergone constant change over the centuries. Today, its architecture reflects the way of life of an entire community of farmers and shepherds, as well as the expansion of their production.

The population of Vercorin was sedentary in the Middle Ages. From the 16th century onwards, they divided their time between Chalais and Vercorin, frequently moving back and forth as follows:

These movements correspond to the different work to be carried out according to the seasons in the plains and mountains. They gradually ceased between the wars, as the aluminium industry in Chippis helped to settle the population on the plains. This "semi-nomadic" lifestyle is not apparent in the village's architecture, which blends in with that of a sedentary village.
