At the start of the new millennium, Vercorin was inhabited for only six months of the year, during the warmer months. Indeed, the inhabitants spent part of the winter in the village of Chalais and stayed in Vercorin from May to October. The current road did not yet exist, and all these journeys were made via the ‘Dérupe’ path. During the winter, watch shifts are organised in the village to protect people’s belongings. These seasonal moves are known as ‘remuages’ or transhumance.
It was in this way that the artists Edouard and Marguerite Vallet discovered the village and fell under its spell. In 1912, they bought a house there, which you can recognise by the commemorative plaque affixed to it.
