As you can see from the cover of the brochure, at that time, the mountain was deserted and consisted of small terraces on which the villagers grew cereals, particularly rye.
These terraces were beautifully captured by Marguerite Vallet-Gilliard in her colourful style, as well as by Edouard Vallet in his more understated style. In both paintings, you can see the Bernese Alps in the background on the other side of the valley.
